POSITIVE PSYCHOLOGY

Emotional fluctuations throughout the day have a huge impact on your life. The way you feel and express your emotions every day affects not just your morale, but also your physical health, performance, and overall trajectory in everything you do. The stories you tell yourself, and how you interpret reality, can make you more energized and effective every day, or they can chisel away at your core, making you weaker.

Have you ever wondered how a 60-year old has more energy than a 30-year old? Part of it is physical conditioning. But the largest part of it is emotional/psychological conditioning.

Some of the world’s most renowned psychology professors, including Barbara Fredrickson, Martin Seligman, and Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi, are dedicating their lives to the research of positive psychology and the effects of various emotions on one’s performance in all aspects of life.

THE 3:1 RATIO

Dr. Barbara Fredrickson originally introduced the foundation of emotional positivity threshold in 1999, and followed it with additional research  in 2004. In 2005, she introduced the following concept: a positive-to-negative emotional ratio exceeding 2.9 leads to a flourishing individual, whereas below 2.9 results in a languishing pattern of behavior.

In other words, below the 3:1 ratio (approx.) of positive to negative emotions, people get pulled into downward spirals, their behavior becomes rigid and predictable, and they begin to feel burdened and lifeless. However, once positive emotions outnumber negative ones by 3 to 1, people feel better, are curious and open to new experiences, and engage with tremendous energy, focus, and happiness.

Several correlational (Cohen et al., 2009)  and longitudinal randomized experiments (Fredrickson et al., 2008; Kok et al., 2013) demonstrate that daily experiences of positive emotions forecast and produce growth in personal resources such as competence, meaning, optimism, resilience, self-acceptance, positive relationships, as well as physical health.

Measuring your emotions throughout the day will empower you with the insights you need to make the leap towards your best life yet.

EMOTIONAL PULSE

Unleash.me gives you the ability to track and understand the range of emotions you experience on a daily basis.

We call it taking your emotional pulse.

Similarly to using a stopwatch to track your physical activity, you use Unleash.me to track your emotional state. Using an Apple Watch or an iPhone, the app collects information about your emotional well being in a swift and discrete manner. The low friction notification system makes it possible to capture what you feel in the actual moment.

EMOTIONAL AWARENESS

It is fascinating to be able to look back and review how you have been feeling over the past week, month, year; review how you really were feeling, not what your perception of those feelings is today. Simple fascination aside, understanding how your emotional energy was affected by various fluctuations in your personal life, career, health, etc. is the key to understanding you will be affected by these types of events in the future. You have the power to turn the key in either direction to achieve your goals.

Leading psychologists, including Professor Matthew D. Lieberman, stand by the fact that recording your experiences and feelings builds emotional awareness. But how can we use the emotional awareness to our advantage?

Self-awareness: recognize and understand your emotions

Self-management: manage, control, and adapt your emotions, mood, and reactions

Motivation: harness your emotions to motivate yourself to take appropriate action, commit, follow-through, and work toward the achievement of your goals

Empathy: discern the feelings of others, understand their emotions, and utilize that understanding to relate to others more effectively

Social Skills: build relationships, relate to others in social situations, lead, negotiate conflict, and work as part of a team

In fact, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), whose founding father is American psychiatrist Aaron Beck, uses journaling (recording of your feelings and emotions) as one of its techniques. CBT is focused on helping people overcome their difficulties by changing their thinking, behavior, and emotional responses.
